A 25-year-old Chicago woman entered a not guilty plea to a first-degree murder charge during a court appearance on Tuesday.
Tatiana Maxwell stands accused of the fatal stabbing of 1-month-old Nyhnia Stovall in the Gage Park neighborhood.
The incident occurred on May 13 inside a residence located in the 3000 block of West 59th Street.
According to the Chicago Police Department and Cook County Court records, prosecutors allege Maxwell stabbed the infant before jumping from an upper-level window.
Officers took the suspect into custody shortly after the incident took place.
Emergency responders transported Maxwell to the University of Chicago Hospital to treat injuries sustained during the fall.
Investigators recovered a knife at the scene of the crime.
One witness reported seeing the suspect hit the ground after falling from the structure.
The witness also recalled seeing police take children from the home and transport them away in squad cars.
The court heard motions for discovery during the proceedings on Tuesday.
A judge scheduled the next court appearance for Maxwell in September.
