The search for a missing Elgin man has ended in tragedy.
Authorities confirmed that a body recovered from a West Dundee creek belongs to 52-year-old Joseph L. Johnson Jr.
Family members first reported Johnson missing to the Elgin Police Department on January 22.
At that time, relatives told police they had not seen him since January 14.
Investigators initially believed Johnson was not in immediate danger.
Detectives from the Major Investigations Division soon took over the case.
They reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed friends to track his final movements.
The investigation revealed that Johnson was last seen on January 16.
He was spotted at approximately 12:30 p.m. near the 500 block of Tollgate Road in Elgin.
The search came to a somber conclusion on the morning of February 2.
West Dundee police notified Elgin officials that a body was spotted in the water.
The discovery was made around 10:50 a.m. in Jelkes Creek.
The location was near the intersection of South 8th Street and Boncosky Road.
The Elgin Fire Department assisted in removing the body from the creek.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Wednesday to confirm the identity.
Preliminary results suggest the cause of death was drowning.
Officials are currently waiting for toxicology results to finalize their report.
Elgin police have now reclassified the case as an active death investigation.
Loved ones took to social media to share their grief and remember the man they called “Blue.”
“It’s with sincere sadness to post that Joseph Johnson was located and deceased,” one friend posted on Facebook.
“Our prayers goes out to the family, his children, mother and grand children,” the post continued.
Johnson’s daughter shared a touching tribute to her father following the news.
“My family and I would like to express our gratitude to everyone for your support and kind thoughts,” she wrote.
“Sadly, my dad became an Angel,” she shared with the community.
She noted that the family will always treasure the joyful laughter and memories shared with him.
“At this moment, my family and I kindly request your love, support, and understanding,” she added.
Another family member expressed the deep pain of the loss in a raw post.
“Dammn this shit hurt frfr!! R.I.P POPS,” they wrote.
“Joseph Johnson Im At lost for words right now!! LOVE U BIG DOGG,” the post read.
The family plans to share details regarding a celebration of life in the near future.
