A quiet afternoon in South Chicago turned into a nightmare when gunshots rang out in broad daylight.
The shooting happened around 2:50 p.m. on Thursday in the 8200 block of South Coles Avenue.
Police officers rushed to the neighborhood after people called 911 to report the gunfire.
When officers arrived on the block, they found a 13-year-old boy lying on the ground.
The young boy had been shot directly in the head.
Paramedics quickly put the teenager into an ambulance and rushed away from the scene.
They drove the boy north to Comer Children’s Hospital because his injuries were very severe.
Doctors at the hospital say the boy is currently in critical condition and fighting for his life.
Back on Coles Avenue, police officers used yellow tape to block off the street and front yards.
Many police cars parked along the block with their blue and red lights flashing.
Officers walked up and down the street with flashlights to look for bullet casings on the ground.
Here is the sad reality: children are not safe walking outside even in the middle of the day.
Detectives are now walking around the neighborhood to ask residents if they saw anything happen.
They are also asking neighbors to check their doorbell cameras for any videos of the shooter running away.
Right now, the police have not arrested anyone for the shooting.
Officers also do not know why someone shot the young boy.
Local neighbors are very angry and scared about the ongoing gun violence in their community.
Safety experts say parents should keep their kids inside after school when violence spikes in the area.
