BREAKING UPDATE (May 29, 2026): The 13-year-old boy shot in the head last week on South Coles Avenue has tragically passed away from his injuries, officials confirmed. This article has been updated below with the latest details from the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner.
A quiet afternoon in South Chicago turned into a nightmare when gunshots rang out in broad daylight.
The shooting happened around 2:50 p.m. on Thursday in the 8200 block of South Coles Avenue.
Police officers rushed to the neighborhood after people called 911 to report the gunfire.

When officers arrived on the block, they found a 13-year-old boy lying on the ground.
The young boy had been shot directly in the head.
The Cook County Medical Examiner has now identified the young victim as DeAntwan McKeever.
Paramedics quickly put the teenager into an ambulance and rushed away from the scene.

They drove the boy north to Comer Children’s Hospital because his injuries were very severe.
Doctors at the hospital kept the boy in critical condition for a week as he fought for his life.
Tragically, officials confirmed that the young boy passed away from his injuries on Thursday.
The violent shooting left the entire block draped in yellow crime tape and neighbors with unanswered questions.

Nearby resident Nathaniel King told ABC7 Chicago he heard a sudden barrage of gunfire right outside his house.
The noise shocked him because he did not realize the danger was right next to his door.
King said the boy was found completely unresponsive in the gangway next to his home.

The neighbor also mentioned that the victim did not look like a gang member at all.
Instead, the boy looked like a regular kid who was just getting out of school for the day.
The shooting happened just steps away from a Chicago Public Schools charter high school.
The gunfire erupted right around the time the school was dismissing students for the afternoon.
However, the 13-year-old victim does not appear to be old enough to actually attend that high school.
Another nearby resident named Ronya Fulgiam said she felt completely overwhelmed to hear what happened.
Fulgiam said she feels deeply hurt for the family because a 13-year-old child is still just a baby.
The police have not said what led to the gunfire, which adds to the mystery for local parents on the block.
Officers spent most of Thursday evening walking door to door to look for security camera video.
Right now, the police have not arrested anyone for the shooting and continue to investigate the scene.
