A 43-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday night in south suburban Hazel Crest.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Stephon L. Smith.

The shooting took place on the 3500 block of Maple Lane.

This address is listed as the neighborhood where Smith lived.

Medical reports show Smith was pronounced dead at approximately 10:45 p.m.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

The Hazel Crest Police Department has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Information regarding the status of the investigation remains limited at this hour.

As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been reported by local authorities.

Police have not released a possible motive for the deadly attack.

The investigation into the homicide remains active and ongoing.

Friends and Family React to Loss

The news of Smith’s death has sent shockwaves through his circle of friends and family.

Loved ones describe Smith as a man who was working hard to improve his life.

“Bro Stephon Smith you will deeply be missed,” one friend shared shortly after the news broke.

Another family member expressed deep pain over the sudden loss of their cousin.

“I remember when we first met we instantly clicked,” they wrote in a social media tribute.

They noted that Smith was “doing so well on your journey to be the best version of you.”

“I’m gone miss you,” the cousin added. “This hurt I feel all over again is crazy.”

Others expressed pure disbelief that such a “good brother” was taken from them.

Friends described Smith as a man who was “full of life and on his way to better.”

One close friend spoke about the unbreakable bond they shared with the victim.

“I love you big bro, I’m really gonna miss my dawg,” he wrote.

He noted that everyone knew their bond was strong and called Smith “big lord.”

“It hurts even posting this,” he added while wishing his friend a peaceful rest.

Recent History

Hazel Crest has seen a steady pulse of activity from law enforcement in recent months.

The 3500 block of Maple Lane is situated in a residential pocket of the village.

Nearby south suburbs have recently grappled with a rise in late-night gun violence.

In nearby Harvey and Markham, police have increased patrols due to similar incidents.

Residents in the Hazel Crest area have previously called for more visible police presence.

Local community leaders often point to the spillover of crime from neighboring high-traffic corridors.

This latest shooting marks another tragic night for a community seeking peace.
