Chicago police are searching for a driver who fled the scene after striking and killing a woman Tuesday night.
The fatal incident occurred around 10:01 p.m. in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Officers responded to the 2100 block of East 83rd Street following reports of a person down.
Upon arrival, police discovered a 32-year-old woman lying unresponsive in the roadway.
First responders quickly transported the victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Medical staff later pronounced the woman dead at the hospital.
Investigators believe a vehicle struck her and then accelerated away without stopping to render aid.
No description of the vehicle or the driver has been released by authorities at this time.
The Chicago Police Major Accident Investigation Unit is currently leading the search for the suspect.
No one is in custody, and the identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.
