A 16-year-old boy is dead after an attempted robbery turned into a fatal shooting in West Pullman.
The incident happened Wednesday afternoon on Chicago’s South Side.
According to Chicago police, the violence broke out in the 11700 block of South Normal Avenue.
The clock hit 3:36 p.m. when a 27-year-old man was approached by the teenager.
Officers say the 16-year-old boy pulled out a handgun.
He then demanded that the man hand over his personal belongings.
The 27-year-old man responded by pulling out his own handgun.
He fired shots at the teenager, striking him.
Reported by Chicago Crime Chaser, the boy has since been identified as Asif Memon.
Emergency responders rushed the 16-year-old to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Hospital staff later pronounced the teenager dead.
Detectives recovered two handguns from the scene of the shooting.
The 27-year-old man was taken in for questioning by investigators.
Police have not yet announced if any charges will be filed in the case.
The investigation into the shooting remains active.
Residents in West Pullman watched as authorities cordoned off the block for several hours.
This shooting marks another instance of daylight violence involving teenagers in the city.
