West Englewood Shooting: 16-Year-Old Boy Fighting for Life After South Side Attack

A Friday night gathering ended in violence when a gunman fired into a crowd in West Englewood.

The shooting occurred just before 10:45 p.m. on the South Side of Chicago.

Officers responded to the 6600 block of South Wolcott Avenue after reports of gunfire.

Investigators believe a suspect pulled out a weapon and targeted a group of people standing outside.

According to Chicago police, three people were struck by the bullets.

A 16-year-old boy suffered gunshot wounds to his neck and body.

He was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Hospital staff listed the teenager in critical condition.

A 40-year-old man was also hit during the attack.

He drove himself to the same hospital with a wound to his hip.

Doctors listed the older victim in good condition.

The Chicago Fire Department transported a third victim to the hospital.

That man, age 28, was shot in the arm and foot.

He is also reported to be in good condition.

Police confirmed that they recovered a gun at the scene of the crime.

However, no suspects are currently in custody.

Area One detectives are leading the investigation into the shooting.

Alderman Raymond Lopez issued a statement regarding the incident on the 6600 block of South Wolcott.

Lopez stated that an unknown offender opened fire on a group of teenagers.

The Alderman noted that while the location is just outside the 15th Ward, he is in contact with the 7th District.

“It is believed this situation is an isolated incident,” Lopez said in his statement.

Recent History

The West Englewood neighborhood has seen a steady pulse of violence in recent months.

The 7th District often faces challenges with outdoor gatherings turning into crime scenes.

Residents in the area have previously called for increased patrols near 66th Street.

This shooting follows a pattern of South Side incidents where large groups are targeted in drive-by or walk-up attacks.

The 6600 block of South Wolcott has been a point of concern for local community leaders in the past.

Despite the recovery of a weapon, the lack of an immediate arrest leaves the neighborhood on edge.

Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes.

They are asking anyone with information to contact the Chicago Police Department.
