A 75-year-old woman is dead and a 39-year-old woman is fighting for her life after two separate fires tore through West Englewood.
The first blaze broke out Tuesday night around 10:15 p.m. on the 7000 block of South Bell Avenue.
Firefighters arrived to find a 75-year-old woman suffering from severe burns inside the home.
Paramedics rushed her to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
No other injuries were reported from the first scene.
Just hours later, a second massive fire erupted nearby at 1:08 a.m. Thursday.
Crews arrived at the 6300 block of South Oakley Avenue to find three houses engulfed in flames.
A 39-year-old woman was pulled from the scene and remains in serious condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
One neighbor described the terrifying moment his son woke up to the smell of smoke.
The neighbor returned home from work to find flames nearly reaching his own roof.
Four adults have been displaced from their homes as a result of the Oakley Avenue fire.
Chicago police and fire investigators are currently working to determine if the two incidents are related.
No official cause has been released for either fire.
