Newly released video footage confirms that former Robbins Acting Police Chief Carl Scott attacked a man inside the police station last year. The attack occurred after the victim arrived to file a complaint against the chief.

The Attack Caught on Camera

On Wednesday, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office released body camera and surveillance video from the incident, which took place on July 1, 2024.

A 43-year-old man had visited the Robbins Police Department to file a complaint against Chief Scott over a prior event. An argument began in the lobby after Scott tried to cite the victim for public nuisance when the man refused to provide his information.

The victim was taken to the back of the station. Prosecutors stated that once in the back room:

  • Scott knocked the victim’s cell phone out of his hand.

  • Scott shoved the victim into a door and hit him in the back of the head.

  • The video shows Scott shoving the man into an interview room, pushing him against a wall, and yelling at him.

In one segment of the video, Scott appears to tell an officer wearing a body camera to “turn it off.” An interview room camera then captures Scott grabbing the victim by the neck and continuing to beat and yell at him for several minutes.

Chief Pleads Guilty

Scott resigned two weeks after the incident, before Mayor Darren Bryant could formally fire him.

Former Chief Carl Scott pleaded guilty to battery charges stemming from the attack earlier this summer.

He was sentenced to two years’ probation. Additionally, his law enforcement certificate was revoked, meaning he can no longer work as a police officer in Illinois.
