Mayor Brandon Johnson Reacts to Bears Hammond Vote, Calls Indiana Move Not a Done Deal

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson issued a firm public response on Friday following the announcement that the Chicago Bears Board of Directors voted to advance stadium developments across the state line in Hammond, Indiana.

Mayor Johnson minimized the severity of the team executive decision by pointing out that the franchise has repeatedly declared real estate intentions across multiple local jurisdictions over the last several years.

The mayor stated directly that the sudden board announcement regarding the Northwest Indiana exploration was not a surprising development for city administration officials.

City Hall executives emphasized that team officials themselves have openly acknowledged this internal organizational vote does not mean a permanent move to Hammond is a completely finalized arrangement.

Mayor Johnson noted that the lack of a finalized site selection within the Indiana municipality leaves a wide window open for the city to salvage its lakefront relationship with the charter NFL franchise.

The mayor asserted that the City of Chicago will actively continue to engage in stadium discussions until residents see physical construction shovels hitting the ground in Hammond.

Municipal leadership pledged to keep future sports facility negotiations firmly grounded in the long-term financial and cultural interests of all Chicago residents.

The public defiance from the mayor’s office underscores a highly contentious multi-state political tug-of-war for control of the massive professional sports entertainment asset.

Mayor Johnson continues to heavily favor his administration’s 2024 lakefront development proposal, which utilizes the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority and a specialized 2% hotel tax to construct a state-of-the-art stadium on the downtown Museum Campus.

The mayor insists his city-centric financial plan provides much safer structural protections for local taxpayers than competing regional options in suburban Illinois or Northwest Indiana.

Bears executive leadership has repeatedly claimed that all viable lakefront opportunities inside the city limits have been entirely exhausted due to prolonged political delays.

The sudden pivot to Indiana escalated significantly after the Illinois General Assembly adjourned its highly anticipated spring legislative session without voting on key property tax breaks for the team.

Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Welch defended the legislative inaction by stating that state lawmakers chose to prioritize direct tax relief for working families over funding multi-billion dollar stadium projects for private sports franchises.

Speaker Welch sharply contrasted the fiscal approach of Illinois with that of Indiana, where state lawmakers unanimously approved complex funding mechanisms to aggressively lure the Bears across state lines.

The newly authorized Indiana legislation establishes the powerful Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority, granting it the explicit legal power to issue state bonds, purchase land parcels, and underwrite stadium construction.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun and Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott have already formed a united front to welcome the Bears, predicting an unprecedented multi-decade economic windfall for Lake County.

Despite the overwhelming political momentum building across the border, Mayor Johnson views the legislative gridlock in Springfield as a fresh opportunity to bring the franchise back to the Chicago negotiating table.

The legal lease agreement for the Bears to utilize Soldier Field runs completely through the 2033 season, though the football organization maintains a contractual right to break the lease early by paying a predetermined financial penalty.

Local community groups and sports business analysts warn that a permanent departure of the charter franchise across state lines would leave lasting economic scars on the South Side hospitality sector.

City officials plan to maintain open lines of communication with the Bears executive board, state legislators, and the Illinois governor to keep the historic team firmly rooted inside the city limits.
