Gunshots shattered the morning calm of a quiet Edgewater residential block on Thursday.

The violence erupted just before 7:20 a.m. in the 1400-block of West Thome Avenue.

Stop being an easy target during neighborhood violence; use these investigative tips to [turn your home into a fortress with 2026 security upgrades].

Residents starting their daily commute found their street flooded with blue and red flashing lights.

Chicago Police confirmed that two men were standing outside when an unknown shooter or shooters opened fire.

The location sits in the shadow of Stephen K. Hayt Elementary School and the Northside Catholic Academy, a neighborhood grade school where families usually expect safety.

One man, age 53, suffered severe gunshot wounds and fought for his life as paramedics rushed him to the hospital.

First responders transported both victims to St. Francis Hospital under emergency conditions.

Medical staff at the hospital later pronounced the second man dead from his injuries.

The 53-year-old victim remains in critical condition as doctors work to stabilize his condition.

Officers saturated the Edgewater neighborhood, cordoning off the sidewalks where the men fell.

Crime scene investigators discovered and recovered two weapons at the scene of the shooting.

The presence of multiple firearms raises immediate questions about the nature of the confrontation on West Thome Avenue.

Detectives spent the morning canvassing the area for doorbell camera footage and potential witnesses.

The shooting occurred at an hour when parents were preparing to drop their children off at the nearby academy.

Yellow tape blocked the pavement where neighbors often walk their dogs or head to the nearby CTA stops.

“I’ve covered hundreds of crime scenes, and one specific camera feature scares off intruders more than a barking dog.”

The motive behind the gunfire remains a mystery as Area Three detectives take the lead on the case.

No suspects are currently in custody, and police have not released descriptions of any potential getaway vehicles.

Edgewater residents expressed immediate concern over the proximity of the violence to a local school.

The scene told a different story than the usual peaceful reputation of this North Side pocket.

Here is the reality: even the most established neighborhoods aren’t immune to the wave of gun violence hitting the city.

Parents at Northside Catholic Academy watched from a distance as investigators marked shell casings on the ground.

The sound of sirens has become an all-too-familiar soundtrack for morning routines across Chicago.

This specific stretch of West Thome Avenue is known for its tree-lined views and historic homes.

The recovery of two firearms suggests a high-stakes encounter that escalated in seconds.

Witnesses reported a heavy police presence that disrupted traffic throughout the morning hours.

Community members are urged to check their home security systems for any activity recorded around 7:00 a.m.

Public safety remains the primary focus as the CPD increases patrols in the immediate vicinity of the school.

The identity of the deceased man is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Chicago’s North Side has seen a fluctuating trend in violent incidents, putting local leaders on high alert.

“Learn how your home security can alert your neighbors before a shooter even reaches your porch.”

This shooting serves as a grim reminder to stay aware of your surroundings, even during the early morning hours.

Always keep your phone charged and your home’s entry points visible to neighbors and cameras.

Reporting suspicious vehicles loitering on residential side streets can prevent tragedies before they happen.

The investigation into the West Thome Avenue shooting is active and ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip to CPDtip.com.

The neighborhood remains on edge as the search for the shooter continues into the evening.

We will continue to track this story and provide updates as the medical examiner releases further details.
