A routine Saturday morning in Southwest Chicago shattered into pure chaos when a crew of four men launched a brazen ATM heist that ended in a stolen police car and a high-speed expressway pursuit.
The violent crime spree cut a path right through the heart of the city’s working-class neighborhoods.

Here is the reality of how the madness began.
Four male suspects pulled up to a local business on the 2800-block of West 55th Street in the Gage Park neighborhood around 7:15 a.m.
The men jumped out of a dark-colored Jeep SUV and smashed their way inside to rip an ATM from the floor.

Their heavy-handed robbery attempt failed completely, forcing the crew to abandon the machine and sprint back to their getaway vehicle.
The driver slammed on the gas and sped away from the Gage Park storefront.
The getaway Jeep tore through local streets before colliding heavily with another SUV in the 3100-block of South California Avenue.

The violent impact left the vehicles mangled on the asphalt right in the middle of the Little Village neighborhood.
A Cook County Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling the perimeter of the nearby Cook County Jail when he spotted the fresh wreckage around 7:30 a.m.
The deputy pulled over and stepped out of his marked squad car to assist at the scene.

The four suspects scrambled out of their ruined Jeep and began to run for their lives.
One desperate suspect charged directly at the lone deputy and shoved past him into the driver’s seat of the idling police vehicle.
The deputy lunged back into the cabin and fought desperately to yank the suspect out of the stolen squad car.

The thief stomped on the accelerator and floored the vehicle, striking the deputy and knocking him to the pavement.
Ambulances rushed the injured lawman to Saint Anthony Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Doctors treated the deputy for minor injuries and released him later that morning.
Back at the crash site, Chicago police officers swarmed the Little Village intersection and locked down the immediate area.
Officers chased down the three remaining suspects on foot and placed them under arrest near the smoking wreckage.
The primary suspect pushed the stolen police vehicle onto the Dan Ryan Expressway for a final, desperate run toward freedom.
Dozens of flashing blue lights trailed the stolen cruiser as Chicago police officers and Illinois State Police troopers joined the high-speed hunt.
The scene told a different story of tactical precision as state troopers pushed ahead of the roaring pursuit.
Troopers quickly deployed heavy-duty spike strips across the concrete lanes near 78th Street in the Chatham neighborhood.
The stolen squad car struck the spikes before 8:30 a.m., shredding its tires and grinding the chase to an abrupt halt.
State troopers and city officers swarmed the immobilized vehicle and dragged the driver into custody without further incident.
Miraculously, no civilian motorists suffered injuries during the dangerous morning pursuit.
Area One detectives are currently interviewing the suspects and leading the active investigation.
