The heavy industrial stretch of Chicago’s Southwest Side transformed into a crime scene on Friday evening.

First responders rushed to the 3700 block of South Pulaski Road after a caller spotted something floating in the water.

The discovery occurred at approximately 4:47 p.m. right along the edge of the sprawling Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

This specific corridor borders the Archer Heights and Brighton Park neighborhoods, where commercial semi-trucks constantly rattle down the pavement.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit quickly arrived at the industrial waterway to recover the individual from the shipping canal.

Officers pulled the body of an unidentified male from the dark water.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead directly at the scene.

Authorities chose not to release the name or the age of the deceased individual during the initial stages of the response.

Investigators kept the immediate area cordoned off as the sun began to set over the industrial district.

The surrounding blocks feature large warehouses, shipping yards, and a heavy flow of commercial traffic moving toward Interstate 55.

Neighbors in the nearby residential pockets of Archer Heights expressed immediate concern over the grim news.

Local families frequently walk near the major intersections of Pulaski Road, though the canal banks themselves remain highly industrial and restricted.

Area detectives spent the evening combing the shoreline for physical evidence or clues that might explain how the man ended up in the deep channel.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will take custody of the body to perform a full autopsy over the weekend.

That autopsy will determine the official cause of death and reveal whether the man suffered any trauma before entering the canal.

Here is the reality of the situation for the surrounding Southwest Side community.

Waterways like the Sanitary and Ship Canal feature steep banks, deep drop-offs, and incredibly strong currents that can easily overwhelm anyone who slips from the edge.

Local safety groups urge residents to completely avoid walking along industrial embankments, especially during twilight hours when visibility drops.

Community members should always report any missing loved ones immediately to help authorities identify individuals found in local waterways.

The scene told a different story from the usual evening commute as flashing blue lights reflected off the industrial warehouses until late into the night.

Chicago police confirm that the active investigation remains open and fluid as they wait for the medical examiner to provide identification.

Area detectives ask anyone with security footage or information regarding recent activity near the Pulaski Road canal bridge to call the department immediately.
