A DuPage County judge ordered a 33-year-old Chicago man to remain in custody ahead of his trial after authorities accused him of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s Addison apartment and forcing her into a vehicle.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Addison Chief of Police Roy Selvik announced that Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion for pre-trial detention during a weekend court appearance.

Tomie Nickles III, whose last known address sits on the 7500 block of South Normal Street in Chicago, faces multiple felony charges stemming from the March incident.

Prosecutors charged Nickles with one count of home invasion causing injury, which is a Class X felony in Illinois.

Nickles also faces one count of residential burglary, two counts of kidnapping, six counts of domestic battery, and two counts of unlawful restraint.

The violent encounter began at approximately 4:20 a.m. on March 8, 2026, inside a residential apartment complex in the quiet suburban community of Addison.

The female victim was asleep in her bed when a sudden loud crashing sound awoke her.

Investigators allege the victim got out of bed and discovered her ex-boyfriend standing directly inside her hallway near the bedroom door.

The suspect previously used the alias Michael Tara during his interactions with the victim.

Nickles allegedly grabbed the woman by her arm and neck immediately after confronting her inside the residence.

The suspect then dragged the woman out of her apartment unit and through the central residential courtyard.

Nickles forced the victim into the front passenger seat of a vehicle parked directly outside the apartment building.

The suspect put the car in drive and left the scene with the victim trapped inside the front seat.

During the drive, Nickles allegedly held the woman by her neck and face while pushing her head against the passenger side window.

Nickles eventually drove the vehicle back to the Addison residence and permitted the victim to exit the car.

The suspect fled the neighborhood immediately after the victim stepped out of the vehicle.

The victim ran inside her home and immediately dialed 911 to contact the Addison Police Department.

Responding patrol officers and detectives launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident and quickly identified Nickles as the primary suspect.

DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Robert Rohm issued an official arrest warrant for Nickles later that same day.

The suspect managed to evade local law enforcement for nearly three months following the initial response.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force located Nickles and executed the outstanding arrest warrant on June 3, 2026.

Officers transported Nickles to the DuPage County jail, where he remained until his first appearance court hearing on June 6, 2026.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin praised local and federal law enforcement agencies for their coordinated response to the suburban abduction.

Berlin noted that the victim sustained physical injuries during the drive but confirmed those injuries were not life-threatening.

The prosecutor emphasized that DuPage County law enforcement will meet violent domestic behavior with the full force of the law.

Chief Roy Selvik credited the Addison Police Department Investigative Division and the U.S. Marshals Service for successfully tracking down the suspect.

Selvik stated that a violent act committed against an innocent resident sleeping in their own bed is deeply unsettling for the community.

Local safety advocates encourage residents experiencing domestic turmoil to utilize regional support networks and install secondary locks on apartment entry doors.

The Addison Police Department maintains a list of local domestic violence resources and safety planning materials on its municipal website.

Nickles will return to court on June 9, 2026, for his next scheduled appearance in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

The public is reminded that these criminal charges constitute accusations and do not serve as proof of guilt.

Under Illinois law, the defendant remains innocent until the government proves his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
