A dramatic neighborhood confrontation from the archives has suddenly burst back onto the internet, racking up millions of fresh views across social media.

The intense footage originally captured on June 22, 2022, reminds Chicagoans that real-world discipline can completely neutralize a street threat in seconds.

Idriz Redzovic, a respected neighborhood staple who owns the Supreme Academy of Jiu-Jitsu in Lincoln Park, is the man at the center of the resurfaced clip.

The veteran martial artist holds a third-degree Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt and boasts over two decades of elite defensive training.

The wild incident originally unfolded on a warm Thursday night when Redzovic pulled up to the 7-Eleven convenience store located near the busy intersection of Ashland Avenue and Lawrence Avenue in Ravenswood.

He simply wanted to buy some refreshing Slurpees for his children.

Instead of a peaceful errand, he walked straight into a tense, unpredictable confrontation boiling over right on the North Side sidewalk.

A hostile man was pacing back and forth outside the entrance and aggressively harassing several young women who were trying to walk past the storefront.

The aggressive individual noticed Redzovic watching the situation unfold and immediately tried to spark a street fight.

The man marched right up to the martial artist and barked a confrontational question, asking Redzovic what he was looking at.

Here is the reality of real-world self-defense training.

True professionals teach their students to take a physical step backward, put their hands up to guard their space, and completely refuse to engage in street drama unless an active threat forces their hand.

Redzovic followed his own rules and refused to feed into the man’s unprovoked hostility.

He kept a sharp eye on the agitator as the man turned around and walked through the glass doors of the convenience store.

The situation inside the store quickly escalated from verbal harassment to outright physical violence.

Store surveillance later revealed that the man had actually walked into the exact same 7-Eleven earlier in the evening to steal merchandise right off the shelves.

When the shoplifter marched back into the building, a brave 19-year-old store employee stepped up and firmly ordered the troublemaker to leave the property.

The angry suspect refused to walk away and instead blindsided the teenage worker with a hard punch straight to the head.

In that split second, the veteran martial artist knew he could no longer stand by as an idle witness.

Redzovic watched the fist connect with the young clerk’s head, and his deeply ingrained protective instincts instantly took complete control of his body.

He lunged forward across the store floor, grabbed the violent attacker before another punch could fly, and dragged him heavily to the ground.

The sudden takedown completely flattened the aggressive suspect like a pancake against the floor tiles.

Redzovic immediately wrapped the man’s limbs up like a pretzel using a highly effective defensive grappling maneuver known in martial arts circles as the “Gift Wrap” or “Twisting Arm Control.”

This specific hold allows a defender to completely freeze an attacker’s arms and neutralize any threat of violence without having to strike back or cut off the person’s ability to breathe.

The entire 18-minute ordeal was broadcast directly to the public because Redzovic used his free hand to start a Facebook Live stream to ensure he had an undisputed digital record of the event.

The pinned suspect realized he was completely trapped and began begging the martial artist to just let him go.

Redzovic refused to break the hold and told the man he was staying right there because he chose to harass innocent girls and punch a working employee.

The scene told a different story than typical street fights because no extra violence or anger entered the equation.

The suspect remained pinned and completely uninjured on the floor until flashing blue lights lit up the neighborhood outside.

Chicago Police Department officers rushed into the store and quickly placed handcuffs on the restrained individual.

Authorities later identified the arrested suspect as 30-year-old Christopher Cruz.

Police officially hit Cruz with two misdemeanor counts covering retail theft and battery for his actions inside the Ravenswood business.

This wild neighborhood incident serves as a timeless reminder of the safety challenges everyday retail workers face across Chicago’s neighborhoods.

Redzovic later pointed out that many citizens only seek out defensive training after they have already been victimized in a scary street encounter.

The local business owner believes regular people should learn how to protect themselves before tragedy strikes their families.

His Lincoln Park academy serves the entire community by teaching safety tactics to children as young as 5 years old and seniors up to 72 years old.

The humble instructor later shared online that he never wanted to hurt the man and truly hopes the viral wake-up call forces the suspect to change his life for the better.
