UPDATE: Cook County Medical Examiner Identifies Victim

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the teenage victim killed in the weekend shooting on the South Side of Chicago.

Officials identified the deceased youth as 16-year-old Stephon Jacobs.

Initial police reports previously listed the victim as 18 years old before the medical examiner confirmed his correct age on Monday.

Authorities discovered the 16-year-old boy lying directly on the ground with a severe gunshot wound to his head.

First responders pronounced Stephon Jacobs dead at the scene in the Chatham neighborhood.

Chicago police detectives have made no arrests in connection with the fatal shooting as of Monday afternoon.

The motive for the late-night attack remains unknown as area investigators continue to interview potential witnesses.

Original Reporting

Chicago police department officers discovered an 18-year-old man shot to death early Sunday morning in the Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side.

The responding patrol officers located the victim at approximately 1:34 a.m. in the 7700 block of South Rhodes Avenue.

Authorities confirmed the young man died from a single gunshot wound to his head.

Paramedics and emergency responders pronounced the victim dead directly at the scene on South Rhodes Avenue.

The identity of the deceased teenager remains withheld pending formal notification of his immediate family by the Cook County Examiner’s Office.

Detectives from Area South are actively leading a homicide investigation into the late-night shooting.

No suspects face criminal charges at this time, and Chicago police report that nobody is currently in custody.

The fatal shooting occurred on a dense residential block of South Rhodes Avenue, located just blocks away from local landmarks like the CTA Red Line station and the busy 79th Street commercial corridor.

Chatham residents woke up on Sunday morning to find yellow police crime scene tape blocking off parts of their neighborhood.

Local community members expressed deep concern over the sudden burst of overnight violence on what is typically a quiet residential avenue.

Longtime homeowners in the Area Two police district noted that local street safety requires a stronger law enforcement presence during the late-night weekend hours.

Chicago community activists are urging anyone who heard or saw vehicles or individuals near 77th Street and Rhodes Avenue around 1:30 a.m. to contact authorities immediately.

Neighbors can submit anonymous tips directly through the Chicago Police Department online reporting portal to assist investigators.

Local community groups advise residents living near the 7700 block of South Rhodes to review their personal Ring doorbell camera footage for any suspicious activity from early Sunday morning.

The Chicago Police Department asks anyone with valid information regarding this active homicide case to call the Area South Detective Division at 312-747-8271.
