An 18-year-old woman is dead after a domestic-related shooting turned into a cross-state tragedy on Saturday, January 17th.
The Belleville and Swansea police responded to reports of gunfire near Jamestown Road just after 11:15 p.m.
Officers discovered three young women at the scene, including Shenandoah Burton, who lay dead in the middle of the street.
Two other women were found inside a nearby vehicle, one of whom suffered gunshot wounds.
Investigators confirmed the shooter targeted the group after a recent breakup with one of the women in the car.
Shenandoah Burton, a friend of the survivor, was caught in the crossfire of what experts call “secondary victimization.”
The suspect fled the scene, sparking a multi-agency search that moved into Missouri.
Hours later, Missouri deputies spotted the suspect’s vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 55.
Before police could intervene, the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his car.
Advocates warn that the first 48 hours after leaving an abusive partner are the most dangerous for victims and their inner circle.
Darlene Jones, of the Violence Prevention Center, stated that abusers often target friends to exert a final sense of control.
Friends and family are now reeling from the loss of a young woman described as a “true light” to the O’Fallon class of 2025.
One loved one shared, “I never in a million years thought I would lose one of my kids… violence is never the answer, never. My childhood best friend has to bury her only child, my only God child, all because of some senseless bullshit.”
“Shenandoah, I have loved you since the day I laid eyes on you,” they continued, remembering her contagious laugh and bright smile.
A close friend described the trauma of the aftermath, saying, “Not everyone will take the time to read this and that’s okay. To lose a close friend this soon in life, just as everything is really beginning, college, moving out, etc, was something i never thought i’d have to experience regardless of how often you see it nowadays. Shenandoah Burton was a true light to many of those in ofallon, especially the class of 2025. I met her our freshman year and really got close to her our sophmore year because of Chloie, the one who was with and saw Shenan in her last moments and thankfully made it out with surface wounds. She was the type of person you’d never expect this to happen to, so full of life, ambition, and genuine empathy. There was never a time where i felt alone when Shenan was around as she seriously took the time to include everyone and check up on you even you were smiling for hours on end. She was the perfect friend for everything and to everyone whether you wanted to gossip, chill in bed and eat, go to a new place cause you’re too nervous to go alone, it didn’t matter because she was a true friend. I sit here tonight 3 days after january 17th, the night she was taken from us, brushing Chloies hair and cleaning her wounds realizing i don’t think the feeling of wishing this was some screwed up joke will ever go away. Tell your friends and family you love them, tell them a lot.”
“She was the type of person you’d never expect this to happen to, so full of life, ambition, and genuine empathy,” another friend recalled.
A former classmate at SIUE noted that Shenandoah “lit up the room just with her presence” and was a loyal friend to everyone she met.
One grieving friend issued a plea to the community: “Guys, please put the guns down, it’s never worth it.”
Belleville police continue to investigate the details of the shooting but are not seeking any additional suspects.
