Chicago police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 30-year-old man on the city’s Far South Side late Friday night.
Responding patrol officers discovered the victim completely unresponsive just before 11:00 p.m. in the first block of West 112th Place in the Roseland neighborhood.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified the deceased individual as Marquis S. Mitchell.
Medical personnel noted that Mitchell suffered multiple severe gunshot wounds to both his head and his abdomen.
First responders rushed to the residential block to provide medical aid but ultimately pronounced Mitchell dead right at the scene.
Area 2 Detectives immediately cordoned off the block with yellow crime scene tape to secure ballistic evidence and search for neighborhood security footage.
Forensic investigators spent several hours mapping out the scene and looking for shell casings along the sidewalk where the shooting took place.
No suspects are currently in custody, and authorities have not released any descriptions of the shooter or any vehicles involved.
Local community groups are urging residents near 112th Place to check their home security cameras and doorbell feeds for any unusual activity around 11:00 p.m.
The Roseland community has experienced an increase in calls for administrative safety patrols, prompting neighborhood advocates to hold an emergency safety briefing this weekend.
Police safety coordinators advise local residents to remain indoors during late-night hours and report any unfamiliar vehicles idling on residential blocks.
Investigators are working to determine a motive for the deadly attack and have not yet established whether Mitchell was the intended target.
The Chicago Police Department requests that anyone with information regarding this active homicide case call the Area 2 Detective Division at (312) 747-8271.
