Arlington Heights police officers increased patrols around the northern edge of the village after a bicyclist attacked a pedestrian late Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. in the residential neighborhood immediately south of Lake Arlington.
An 18-year-old female victim told responding officers that she was walking home when the male suspect rode up to her.
The encounter took place near the intersection of Windsor Drive and Jonquil Circle, an area primarily made up of single-family homes and townhouses.
According to police investigators, the unknown male suspect initially approached the woman and asked her for her name.
The interaction turned physical when the suspect suddenly pushed the teenager directly to the ground.
The male suspect then positioned himself over the victim and began choking her with his hands.
Faced with the physical assault, the young woman fought back against her attacker and managed to separate herself from him.
The victim ran toward the roadway and successfully flagged down a passing motorist to obtain assistance.
That passing driver immediately called 911 to report the ongoing emergency and summon law enforcement personnel to the scene.
The prompt action by the passing motorist allowed emergency dispatchers to send police units to the Windsor Drive location within minutes.
Paramedics evaluated the 18-year-old woman at the scene and determined that she sustained non-life-threatening physical injuries.
The bicyclist fled the immediate area before the first police cruisers arrived at the intersection.
Arlington Heights Police Department detectives have not yet released a detailed physical description of the male suspect or the bicycle he used.
