UPDATE: 13-Year-Old Suspect Arrested and Formally Charged with Felony Counts

The Chicago Police Department announced formal felony charges Monday afternoon against a 13-year-old male juvenile in connection with the mass shooting on South Prairie Avenue.

Arresting officers intercepted the 13-year-old suspect at 9:56 p.m. on Saturday night in the 4600 block of South Calumet Avenue, just 17 minutes after the initial outbreak of gunfire.

Witnesses successfully identified the teenager as the lone gunman who shot the four young victims down the block.

Revised police records now reveal that the victims include an 11-year-old male, two 13-year-old males, and a 14-year-old male.

Prosecutors filed four felony counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm against the 13-year-old shooter.

The state also leveled one felony count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a person under 18 years old and an additional felony count for operating a firearm without an eligible Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.

The juvenile offender remains in secure custody ahead of an official Juvenile Detention Hearing scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2026, at the juvenile courthouse located at 1100 South Hamilton Avenue.

A second outbreak of gunfire occurred less than two hours later and less than one mile away from the initial crime scene, wounding three additional individuals.

Officers responded to emergency alerts in the 4600 block of South Federal Street and discovered two young women and one man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victims at the South Federal Street scene could not provide arriving patrol officers with any descriptive details regarding the shooter or the events leading up to the gunfire.

Paramedics rushed an 18-year-old woman to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition after a bullet struck her in the abdomen.

Medical personnel also transported a 19-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her right hand and a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder to the same facility.

Hospital staff listed both the 19-year-old woman and the 20-year-old man in good condition, and doctors expect all three victims from the Federal Street incident to survive their injuries.

Third Ward Alderman Pat Dowell released an official public statement on Sunday condemning the recurring weekend violence involving local youth.

The local politician called for immediate and increased accountability from Chicago neighborhood parents, business owners, and major social media platforms to help protect children as summer begins.

Alderman Dowell questioned why young children are occupying city streets late at night instead of remaining safely at home in bed.

The Chicago Police Department stated early Monday morning that they have no actionable updates or suspect descriptions available for the secondary shooting on Federal Street.

Original Reporting

An unidentified gunman shot and injured four children Saturday night on the South Side of Chicago.

The incident took place in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood, a residential community situated within Cook County lines.

First responders rushed to the 4500 block of South Prairie Avenue after receiving emergency calls at approximately 9:39 p.m.

Chicago Police Department officers arrived at the residential block and discovered four young male victims positioned near each other on the street.

Preliminary physical evidence indicates the victims stood outside together when the suspect approached the group and discharged a firearm multiple times.

The victims range in age from 12 to 14 years old.

Paramedics transported three of the injured boys to Comer Children’s Hospital, a specialized pediatric medical center located on the nearby University of Chicago campus.

Medical personnel treated a 12-year-old boy for a gunshot wound to his left leg, and hospital officials listed him in good condition.

A 13-year-old boy sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot during the gunfire and also remains in good condition at the facility.

Ambulances brought the third victim, a 14-year-old boy, to the same pediatric center to receive treatment for a graze wound on his back.

Emergency staff listed the 14-year-old victim in fair condition following his arrival.

First responders redirected the fourth victim, a 13-year-old boy, to Stroger Hospital on the Near West Side.

Doctors at Stroger Hospital treated the teenager for a gunshot wound to his right leg and confirmed he remains in good condition.

Local community leaders note that the late-night violence on Prairie Avenue highlights ongoing safety concerns for families residing near the local parks and schools in the Grand Boulevard community area.

Residents looking to minimize risks during late-night neighborhood travel can utilize well-lit major thoroughfares like South Martin Luther King Drive or South Indiana Avenue instead of secondary residential side streets.

Community organizations recommend that local parents establish strict evening check-in times and encourage youths to travel in larger groups when walking home after dark.

The Chicago Police Department has not released a description of the shooter or a potential motive for the attack.

Area Central detectives are actively processing ballistic evidence collected from the scene and looking for any available security camera footage from nearby residential buildings.

Authorities urge local homeowners with personal ring cameras or dashcam footage captured near 45th Street and Prairie Avenue on Saturday night to contact law enforcement immediately.

Community members can submit anonymous tips regarding the shooting directly to the Chicago Police Department tracking portal at cpdtip.com.
