Deserted city sidewalks offer zero protection when a coordinated crew decides to target you in the dark.
The scene told a different story early Monday morning.
Fear replaced the usual weekend energy when a massive armed crew ambushed two young men right on the sidewalk.

The attack happened in the heart of the neighborhood’s entertainment district.
It was exactly 3:45 a.m. when the peace shattered.
A 19-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were simply standing outside on the 600 block of North Clark Street.
They were just steps away from the busy intersection of Ontario Street.
Suddenly, a group of five or six strangers surrounded them out of nowhere.
The trap closed before the victims could even realize they were in danger.

Here is the reality of what happened next.
The robbers pulled out two handguns and pointed them directly at the young men.
Cold steel gleamed under the Chicago streetlights.
The gunmen barked orders and demanded everything the victims had in their pockets.
Fearing for their lives, the two young men handed over their cell phones, wallets, and personal property.
The entire terrifying ordeal lasted only a matter of moments.
Once they had the loot, the criminals did not run away on foot.

They piled into a waiting white sport-utility vehicle parked nearby.
The driver slammed on the gas pedal.
The getaway SUV sped east down Ontario Street and vanished into the morning darkness.
Thankfully, neither of the young victims suffered physical injuries during the confrontation.
The psychological toll on the community is a completely different story.
This specific corner of River North is usually packed with diners, clubgoers, and residents walking their dogs.
Neighbors are now wondering if any sidewalk in the area is truly safe after midnight.
Belmont Area detectives took over the investigation as soon as the sun came up on Monday.
Officers searched the area for security cameras attached to nearby businesses and high-rise apartments.
Investigators hope a local business captured the license plate of that white SUV.
Nobody has been arrested yet.

Local leaders are urging everyone in the neighborhood to stay highly alert during the late-night hours.
Keep your head up and your eyes off your phone screen when walking through the district.
Try to travel in large groups rather than walking alone past midnight.
If you see a suspicious group exiting a vehicle, walk into a open business immediately.
Your safety matters much more than any piece of property you own.
Anyone with information about this crew or the white SUV should call the Chicago Police Department immediately.
