The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the fallen officer as 38-year-old John Bartholomew.
Bartholomew was a dedicated member of the Chicago Police Department for 10 years.
The shooting occurred Saturday morning around 11 a.m. at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital.
Police responded to the facility located at 5140 North California Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed that two officers were struck by gunfire during the incident.
Officer Bartholomew died from his injuries shortly after the shooting.
A second officer, aged 57, remains in critical condition at Illinois Masonic Hospital.
The veteran officer has served with the Chicago Police Department for 21 years.
Both officers were assigned to the 17th District.
Superintendent Snelling stated that the suspect is currently in custody.
Investigators recovered a weapon at the scene following the arrest.
The hospital was placed on lockdown for several hours as tactical teams cleared the building.
