A violent confrontation in East Garfield Park left two people dead late Monday night.
The incident happened in the 2800-block of West Washington Boulevard around 9:42 p.m.
Chicago police say the violence began as a heated argument between two men.
The dispute quickly turned into a physical fight.
A 44-year-old man allegedly pulled out a sharp object during the struggle.
He used the object to attack a 31-year-old man.
The 31-year-old man carries a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card.
Police say the younger man drew a gun and fired shots.
The 44-year-old attacker was hit by the gunfire.
First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
Doctors later pronounced the 44-year-old man dead.
A 38-year-old woman was also caught in the line of fire.
Witnesses say she was trying to intervene to stop the fight.
She was struck by a bullet during her attempt to help.
The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
She later died from her injuries at the hospital.
Police officers arrived on the scene and took one man into custody.
Investigators say charges are currently pending against the individual.
Yellow crime scene tape blocked off the West Side neighborhood for several hours.
Detectives are still working to determine the exact motive behind the initial fight.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released to the public.
