No one is in custody, and the identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.
Traffic Safety in South Chicago
The South Chicago neighborhood has seen a concerning rise in pedestrian-related incidents over the last year.
Residents have frequently voiced concerns about speeding and a lack of visible crosswalks near the 83rd Street corridor.
This specific stretch of East 83rd Street is known for heavy evening traffic as drivers transit between Stony Island Avenue and the lakefront.
Just last month, a similar non-fatal hit-and-run occurred only blocks away, leaving a cyclist injured.
Community activists continue to push for “Vision Zero” improvements, including better street lighting and speed cameras.
Data from the city shows that South Side neighborhoods often experience a higher rate of hit-and-run fatalities compared to the North Side.
Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses to identify the make and model of the car involved.
Authorities are urging anyone with information or dashboard camera footage to contact the Major Accident Investigation Unit immediately.
