Investigators have closed a tragic case involving a fatal shooting at a West Side hospital parking garage.

The victim was heading to a medical appointment with her infant child when the attack occurred.

University of Illinois-Chicago police identified the victim as 34-year-old Shawnquanice Q. Kimbrough.

The shooting took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Wood Street Parking Structure.

Officers responded to the scene at 1100 South Wood Street just after 1:30 p.m.

Witnesses saw a heavy police presence on the third level of the garage following the gunfire.

Miraculously, the infant child was not harmed during the violent encounter.

The suspect fled the scene before authorities could make an arrest.

Investigators later confirmed the suspect was found dead at a different location.

The identity of the shooter and their cause of death have not yet been released.

Officials stated the suspect had no known affiliation with the university.

A motive for the targeted shooting remains under investigation by local authorities.

UIC officials expressed deep condolences to Kimbrough’s family during this devastating time.

The university has officially announced the closure of its internal investigation into the matter.

Recent History

The Illinois Medical District is generally considered a high-security zone due to the presence of multiple hospitals.

However, the Near West Side has seen a fluctuating trend in violent crime over the last year.

Parking structures have become a specific point of concern for Chicago commuters and patients alike.

Last year, several robberies were reported in similar multi-level garages across the West Side.

Community activists have frequently called for increased lighting and visible security patrols in these areas.

This incident marks one of the most high-profile acts of violence at the UIC campus in recent months.

The proximity of the shooting to a pediatric care center has left many local residents shaken.

Safety experts often advise hospital visitors to remain hyper-aware of their surroundings in isolated garage levels.

The city continues to struggle with domestic-related violence spilling into public spaces.

Local leaders are expected to meet next week to discuss enhanced security measures for medical district employees.
