A multi-state manhunt ended in Illinois after police arrested a Chicago vascular surgeon for the murders of an Ohio dentist and his wife.
Michael David McKee, 39, of Chicago, now faces murder charges in the deaths of his ex-wife, Monique Tepe, and her husband, Spencer Tepe.
McKee is a medical professional who holds active vascular surgery licenses in both Illinois and California.
The couple was found shot to death on the second floor of their Columbus, Ohio, home on December 30.
Police confirmed the couple’s two young children were found unharmed inside the house during the discovery.
Investigators believe the killings occurred between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. while the family was home for the holidays.
Surveillance video from the Columbus neighborhood captured a person of interest walking in a nearby alley during those early morning hours.
Detectives used that footage and local surveillance to identify McKee and track his vehicle across state lines.
Law enforcement finally located and arrested McKee in Rockford, Illinois, roughly 80 miles northwest of Chicago.
Following the arrest, Chicago police spent hours stationed outside McKee’s luxury condominium in the 2100 block of North Lincoln Park West.
Neighbors in the Lincoln Park building expressed total shock, describing McKee as someone who seemed normal during casual poolside chats.
“You meet people everywhere, and you don’t know if they’re a serial killer,” neighbor Gera-Lind Kolarik told ABC7.
Court records indicate that McKee and Monique Tepe divorced in 2017 before she remarried Spencer Tepe.
The Tepe family released a statement thanking investigators for their “tireless efforts” in capturing the suspect.
Family and friends are gathering this Sunday for a celebration of life service to honor the couple.
McKee is currently being held in the Winnebago County jail and is scheduled for a court appearance on Monday.
The community remains focused on the two young children left behind by the tragedy.
