Nearly 40 years after Joan Bernal vanished, her husband is behind bars.
Gilbert T. Bernal Sr., 82, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 1988 disappearance of his wife, the Will County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Joan Bernal was last seen alive on December 9, 1988.
At the time, her husband told authorities he dropped her off at a bus stop in Oklahoma with $1,500 during a family trip.
He didn’t officially report her missing until over two weeks later.
However, investigators and family members tell a different story.
According to court records, Bernal’s son witnessed his father grabbing Joan by the neck and dragging her across their Joliet home during a domestic dispute.
Another witness reported seeing the suspect drag Joan behind the house.
This isn’t the first time Gilbert Bernal has faced these charges.
He was arrested for the murder in 1993, but the case was dismissed before it reached trial.
The breakthrough came after the Will County Sheriff’s Office formed a dedicated cold case team.
After re-examining the evidence, a grand jury returned a sealed indictment on December 9, 2025, exactly 37 years to the day Joan was last seen.
Though Gilbert Bernal is now in custody, Joan’s body has never been found.
Investigators believe she may have been buried under concrete in Joliet.
The case gained national attention last year when it was featured on the Oxygen Network’s “Cold Justice.”
On the show, the couple’s daughter shared the pain of growing up without her mother and the silence her father enforced regarding the disappearance.
Gilbert Bernal was extradited from his home in Flint, Michigan, to Will County on Friday.
He is scheduled for a court hearing on January 12.
