The world of gospel music is mourning the loss of a giant.
Richard Smallwood, the legendary composer and pianist whose music bridged the gap between classical elegance and spiritual soul, passed away early Tuesday, December 30, 2025.
Smallwood died at the age of 77 at the Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Maryland.
His publicist confirmed that his death was caused by complications from kidney failure.
Born in Atlanta in 1948 and raised in Washington, D.C.,
Smallwood was a prodigy who began playing piano by ear at just five years old.
He later formed The Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977, followed by the group Vision.
His unique ability to blend complex classical arrangements with traditional gospel created a sound that changed the genre forever.
