Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, is expected to appear in court Wednesday. He faces two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents.
Police found Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, dead in their Brentwood home two days ago.
On Tuesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the formal charges, noting that the crime involved a knife.
Authorities arrested Nick Reiner hours after the bodies were discovered. He was found near the University of Southern California, about 14 miles away from the crime scene. Police say he did not resist arrest.
Because the case involves multiple murders and the use of a dangerous weapon, the charges carry “special circumstances.”
This means the penalties could be more severe. While the death penalty is an option, prosecutors have not yet decided if they will seek it.
Rob Reiner was a beloved figure in entertainment, famous for starring in All in the Family and directing classics like The Princess Bride.
Michele Singer Reiner was an accomplished photographer and activist. The couple had been married for 36 years.
Longtime friends, including Billy Crystal and Larry David, released a joint statement describing the couple as “dynamic, unselfish, and inspiring.”
What Happens Next?
Nick Reiner’s first court date was originally set for Tuesday, but was delayed for medical reasons. He is currently being held without bail.
The legal battle will feature high-profile attorneys on both sides.
Nick is represented by Alan Jackson, known for defending Harvey Weinstein. Leading the prosecution is Habib Balian, who recently handled the Robert Durst trial.
As of now, police have not shared a motive for the killings.
