Joe Ely, the celebrated Texas singer-songwriter whose career spanned more than five decades, died on Tuesday at the age of 78.
Ely passed away at his home in Taos, New Mexico, with his wife, Sharon, and daughter, Marie, by his side. The cause of death was complications from Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and pneumonia, according to a family statement.
Born on February 9, 1947, in Amarillo, Texas, Ely became a key figure in the influential music scene that emerged from Lubbock and later flourished in Austin. His work as a songwriter, singer, and storyteller earned him widespread respect and cemented his legacy in Texas and Americana music.
Ely signed with MCA Records in the 1970s and spent over 50 years recording and performing his music around the world, leaving an indelible mark on the genre.
