Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has threatened to leave the club if the club’s fans, and board no longer want him following the heartbreaking defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The Red Devils suffered another defeat in a disastrous season to cap off a disappointing first season under Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese manager has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford since replacing Erik Ten Hag in November, winning 16 games out of 41 games while conceding 62 goals in 41 games.

He took over when the club was 13th on the log but they have slipped to 16th in their worst ever season in the Premier League.

Amorim believes he is the right man for the club but he has vowed to quit if he does not have the support of the fans and the board.

He said: “If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit again. I am confident in my job. As you see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.

“At this moment, I am not here to defend myself. It’s not my style. I have nothing to show to the fans. In this moment [I need] a little bit of faith.”

Amorim also revealed that the players gave everything but it was unfortunate they couldn’t score.

He said: “We are obviously devastated with this loss. We lost one game in this competition, we didn’t win it in the last game. I think if you look at the whole game, we were the better team but if you don’t score goals you don’t win matches.

“The first half was a little bit tense. Possession for both teams was not long, we couldn’t keep the ball for so long, Tottenham were the same. A lot of second balls.

“But in the second half, we push, we push the opponent near the box, we try to cross, to create situations. In the end, they defended the goal they scored in the first half. In the second half, we tried everything but in the end it was not enough.”

Amorim admitted that the club will suffer without Champions League football next season.

He said: “It’s hard to talk about positives today but we need to take advantage of everything. We are going to suffer because we don’t have   Champions League.

“It is hard on the club, but on the other side we will have more time to develop the team, to pay attention to our Academy and to prepare for the future. That is clear. We need to use every minute to improve the team and we always have plans to go to the summer”.

Meanwhile, Manchester United defender, Luke Shaw has backed Ruben Amorim to continue as the coach of the despite a difficult season.

He said: “I can say 100 per cent right now he’s the right man. Results have not been good at all. I’ve been here for a long time now and been through different managers.

“Ruben, for me, I talk on my behalf and I can talk on behalf of all the players, he is 100 per cent the right manager to take us back to where this club should be.

“It’s going to be a very difficult process, us as players, we’ve let a lot of people down, including Ruben. I will say it again, we’ve been nowhere near good enough the whole season.”

Manchester United will be hoping to end a tough season with a home clash against Aston Villa on Sunday.
