Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim says he can’t explain why the club’s fans are supporting him despite leading them to their worst ever finish in the Premier League.
Amorim will be in the dugout on Wednesday when Manchester United takes on Tottenham in the Europa League final in Spain.
However, The Portuguese manager has endured a horrible time in the Premier League with the team languishing in the 16th position.
The Red Devils have not won any of their last eight Premier League matches, Amorim is wondering why he is still getting the full support of the fans and the board.
He said: “I know that in this kind of club, also in Tottenham, especially Manchester United, it’s strange because you have some coaches here that lose some games and they are sacked… it’s hard to explain,” Amorim told a news conference Tuesday.
“I think people see what we are trying to do, I think that people see that sometimes I’m thinking more about the club than myself.
“People understand, especially the board, that we have a lot of issues that in the context, is really hard.
“I don’t know how to explain why the fans like me in this moment, it’s hard to explain,” continued Amorim.
“I will try to prove myself to the fans, to the board, but I don’t have an explanation…
“But we will reach a moment where we have to win, no matter what.”
Amorim reiterated that winning the Europa League will not solve the club’s problems but admitted that it will create a brighter future.
He said: “We already know the problems, there’s a lot of things we need to change in our club… it will not be solved by winning a cup.
“We have bigger things to deal with than that, to put this club back to the top.
“(If we win) people will look at our team in a different way, because winning a European title is really important.
“But again, nothing is going to change (about) our season, players know, the staff know, the fans know. But winning a European title can help us have that feeling that can help us build a future.”
Amorim replaced Erik Ten Hag in November, and he has the chance to make history on Wednesday in the Europa League final.
Winning the Europa League will afford Manchester United the opportunity to play in the Champions League next season.
