A suspect remains at large after a shooting at Wilmington Hospital on Tuesday resulted in one death and one injury.
Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos confirmed the fatality during an official news conference following the incident.
Officers arrived at the facility on the 500 block of West 14th Street at approximately 3:30 p.m. to respond to reports of gunfire.
Police located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds upon arrival at the hospital.
One of the victims succumbed to their injuries, while the condition of the second victim remains undisclosed.
Investigators are currently working to identify the shooter and have promised to release further details as the investigation unfolds.
As reported by CBS News, ChristianaCare shifted its emergency department to a divert status immediately following the shooting.
The hospital system stated that its primary focus remains the safety of patients and staff alongside the continuity of medical care.
Wilmington police are spearheading the investigation with support from New Castle County Police and Delaware State Police.
The FBI’s Baltimore office is also assisting Delaware authorities in the search for the suspect.
Witnesses inside the building described a scene of intense panic as the event unfolded.
Patient guide Brian Pfeffer stated that he heard two sounds resembling firecrackers coming from the ground floor.
Pfeffer described the immediate instinct to evacuate the building as part of his emergency training.
Family members of hospital employees waited outside while SWAT teams conducted a room-to-room search of the facility.
Lydia Jones, who was waiting to meet her daughter, expressed relief after being reunited with her following the lockdown.
Elected officials including Rep. Sarah McBride, Sen. Chris Coons, and Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester have offered public statements regarding the tragedy.
