Two people are dead following a high-speed, fiery crash in the West Loop early Sunday morning.
Chicago Police responded to the 400-block of South Jefferson Street around 2:19 a.m.
Officers arrived to find a white sedan engulfed in flames.
The vehicle had slammed into a concrete support column for the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway.
Chicago Fire Department crews rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze.
Once the fire was out, officials discovered two victims inside the car.
Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
The impact was so severe that the vehicle was nearly unrecognizable.
Police have not yet released the identities of the two people killed.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Major Accidents unit.
It is currently unclear if speed or alcohol played a role in the collision.
Traffic investigators remained on the scene for several hours to collect evidence.
Safety Concerns in the West Loop
The West Loop has seen a significant increase in traffic volume as the neighborhood continues to grow.
This specific stretch near the Eisenhower Expressway entrance is known for late-night speeding.
Long-time residents have frequently voiced concerns about drivers treating Jefferson Street like a drag strip.
Just last year, a similar high-speed incident occurred only blocks away.
The concrete pillars of the I-290 overpass offer no “give” during a high-impact collision.
City officials have been pressured to install more traffic-calming measures in this industrial-turned-residential hub.
As the investigation continues, many are asking if better lighting or barriers could have prevented this tragedy.
