Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen is set to return to the squad for the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on Saturday.
He has been included in the team’s list for the final after recovering from a knee injury ahead of schedule.
The German international sustained a knee injury in September that ruled him out of the season, however, he returned to training in March and has now been giving permission to return to first team football.
Barcelona signed Wojciech Szczesny, who came out of retirement, and he has been the first-choice goalkeeper since replacing academy graduate Iñaki Peña at the beginning of the year.
There is likely to be a fight for shirt between Stegen, and Szczesny ahead of the last few games of the season but the former Juventus goalkeeper is expected to keep his place in the final.
Both goalkeepers can be included in the matchday squad in the La Lig, and the Copa del Rey but Szczesny was registered in Ter Stegen’s place in the Champions League.
According to ESPN, Szczesny would have to be unregistered for Ter Stegen to be re-registered in European competitions.
Stegen has been Barcelona’s number one goalkeeper since joining the club in 2016, making over 400 appearances while also winning winning five LaLiga titles, five Copas del Rey and one Champions League.
Szczesny has played a key role in Barcelona’s quest to winning an historic treble, recording stunning performances in the La Liga, Champions League, and Copa del Rey.
The Blaugrana will be in action in the Champions League against Inter Milan in the semi-final first leg at home on Wednesday.
