Barcelona set a new record in the Spanish La Liga by recording 40 shots in the 1-0 win over Mallorca to go seven points clear of second-placed Real Madrid.
The table-toppers dominated the proceedings but they were only able to score one goal through Dani Olmo in the second half.
Flick’s men recorded a stunning 24 shots in the first half without scoring with Mallorca goalkeeper, Leo Roman in an inspired form denying Dani Olmo, while making 12 saves in the encounter.
However, Olmo produced a tidy finish immediately after the restart to give Barcelona a priceless win.
It was a record-equalling day for Barcelona as they recorded the most shots on goal in a LaLiga match since at least 2003, tied with Real Madrid’s 40 against Real Zaragoza in 2011.
Hansi Flick was surprised that the team could muster such a number without scoring more than one goal but was impressed with the win and the clean sheet.
He said: “It was 40 shots, maybe not on target, but 40 shots. The way we played football was pretty good. We created a lot of chances. Of course we missed a lot, but a clean sheet, 1-0, with all the changes we made, I appreciate how we played today.
“I always think positive so it’s never in my mind that I think we will lose that, For me, it was more important to control the game and not make many mistakes.
“I am happy about that. Sometimes a 1-0 is good, we defended much better than the matches before. We’re on a good way.”
Flick used the game to rotate the squad ahead of the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League clash against Inter Milan next week.
Ansu Fati was handed a rare start, playing for 62nd minutes before be was replaced by Raphinha.
“I think so,” Flick said when asked if Fati had taken a step forward. “You can see his teammates also support him. Also the fans.
“I think for him it’s a really good day today. It will help him to have confidence, more belief in himself. It is a good day for him and also for us.
“You can see all the players that came in today connected with the other players. They know what to do, how we want to play. This is a good thing to see. I am happy that everyone is connected.”
The win was enough to increase Barcelona’s lead to seven points over Real Madrid, who are in action against Getafe on Wednesday.
