The Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) officially renamed the well-known Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop, honoring the indigenous rapper and Bariga native, Olamide Adedeji.
The announcement, made by outgoing Chairman Hon. Kolade Alabi David during the commissioning of several infrastructural projects, has sparked widespread discussion across Lagos and beyond.
The renaming is part of a broader initiative to celebrate local and national icons who have elevated Bariga’s profile globally.
Alongside the bus stop, Ajidagan Street was renamed Olamide Adedeji (Baddo) Street, reflecting Olamide’s significant contributions to Nigerian music and youth empowerment.
Other streets were also renamed, including Ilaje Road, now King Sunny Ade Road, and Ifeanyi Street, now Abolore Akande (9ice) Street.
A video capturing the moment of the announcement has gone viral, showing council officials unveiling the new signage.
“As an administration, we took our time to reflect on those who have put our local council on the global map through their talents,” Alabi said, emphasizing the intent to honor legacies that resonate with the community.
The decision has elicited mixed reactions. Some residents and social media users praised the recognition of Olamide, a dominant figure in Nigeria’s music industry for over a decade.
Others, however, expressed nostalgia for the Charly Boy Bus Stop, named after veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, with some arguing it holds deep cultural significance.
Charly Boy himself responded dismissively, stating, “Na dem sabi,” in a comment to local media.
