A Nigerian woman took to social media to condemn the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after its operatives allegedly stormed her home and neighborhood around 4 a.m.
The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, claimed that EFCC officials climbed over her fence, broke down her door, assaulted her husband, and searched his phone, only to apologize after finding no evidence of wrongdoing.
“They climbed the fence into our home,” she said in the video, describing the early morning raid.
“They woke us up, broke our door, beat my husband, and searched his phone. After finding nothing, all they said was ‘sorry’.”
The woman noted that her home was not the only target, as other houses in the neighborhood were also raided.
The incident has reignited public criticism of the EFCC, with many Nigerians expressing anger over the agency’s aggressive tactics.
Similar complaints have surfaced in the past, including reports of EFCC operatives breaking into homes and hotels without warrants, damaging property, and harassing residents.
A 2021 report detailed a journalist’s home being invaded at 2 a.m., with operatives allegedly causing significant damage.
Another case in 2023 involved the arrest of 69 students during a nighttime raid at Obafemi Awolowo University, prompting calls for reform.
Public reactions on social media have been heated, with users demanding accountability. One X user commented, “If they can’t find anything, they should pay for damages. This is uncalled for.” Another questioned the agency’s methods, saying, “Bursting into homes like this without evidence is unacceptable.”
