The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT) in Lagos has made a major bust by intercepting two large containers filled with expired medicines. These drugs, worth about N130 million, were seized as part of their efforts to stop illegal smuggling and protect public health.
Comptroller Eghosa Edelduok, the head of the KLT Command, shared this news during a press conference in Lagos over the weekend. She explained that the containers, numbered HLBU 1067338 and HLBU 2239792, were caught by the enforcement team. The expired drugs broke rules under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other import laws.
“The containers with these outdated pharmaceuticals have been given to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further handling,” Edelduok said. “This action shows our strong stand against any violations and our dedication to keeping Nigerians safe from harmful products.”
In addition to the seizure, Edelduok highlighted the command’s strong financial performance. From January to June 2025, the KLT generated N89.2 billion in revenue. That’s a big jump of 63% compared to N54.8 billion collected during the same time in 2024 – an increase of N34.4 billion.
She credited this growth to better operations, stricter enforcement, and stronger partnerships with businesses and other groups. These steps have helped improve how people follow the rules and brought in more money for the country.
Edelduok promised that the command will keep focusing on being open, responsible, and professional in their work. “We will continue teaming up with everyone involved to make trade easier, ensure rules are followed, and support Nigeria’s economy,” she added.
She also thanked all partners and agencies for their help, saying their support is key to success.
This seizure and revenue boost come at a time when Nigeria is working hard to fight fake and expired drugs, which can be dangerous to health. The NCS’s actions show their role in not just collecting taxes but also safeguarding citizens.
