The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), working with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), has shut down MovieBox.ng, a website known for illegally streaming movies, music, and live sports.
The suspension took effect on July 20, 2025, as part of the NCC’s ongoing fight against online piracy.
Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, announced the action in a statement released Thursday in Abuja.
NCC Director-General Dr. John Asein explained that MovieBox.ng used multiple mirror domains to distribute pirated content, a tactic common among piracy networks.
“These sites promote illegal content through clone and fallback domains linked to known piracy operations,” Asein said.
The shutdown has been praised by copyright holders in the film, music, and broadcast industries.
Asein thanked NiRA for its quick response and called on internet service providers and other stakeholders to comply with takedown requests under the Copyright Act, 2022.
The NCC is also working to disable other related mirror sites and MovieBox.ng alternatives.
The public has been warned to steer clear of illegal streaming platforms like MovieBox.ng, which can expose users to risks such as malware, identity theft, and financial scams.
