A man is facing multiple charges, including False Impersonation of a Peace Officer and Assault, after an Aurora police officer fired a shot at his vehicle near East Aurora High School last week.
Aurora police confirmed that 48-year-old Dustin R. Legat was taken into custody following the incident on Tuesday morning. Police verified that Legat has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency.
The events unfolded after a 911 caller reported a driver who was following them, claiming to be an officer and displaying a gun near Jackson Street and East Benton Street.
Officers responded just after 9:30 a.m. and located the vehicles at 4th Avenue and South State Street, which is located close to East Aurora High School. Legat was standing outside his vehicle when officers arrived.
During the ensuing encounter, an Aurora police officer discharged their firearm once, striking Legat’s vehicle. No injuries were reported, and no one was hit by the bullet. The officer who fired the weapon was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Authorities confirmed on Monday that Legat now faces charges including:
-
False Impersonation of a Peace Officer
-
Assault
-
Disorderly Conduct
-
Blue Oscillating Flashing Lights
The incident remains under investigation by the Aurora Police Department’s Deadly Force Investigative Team and its Investigations Division. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact them directly.
