Afrobeat musician Made Kuti, grandson of the late music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has strongly responded to critics attacking his marriage to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, on the grounds of ethnicity.
The singer, who wedded Onyenso in a civil ceremony in Lagos in November 2023, has faced negative remarks from some social media users who disapprove of their union simply because of their different ethnic backgrounds.
Recently, an X user identified as @AdemolaOgudu described Made Kuti as a “foolish Yoruba man” for marrying an Igbo woman. The comment sparked reactions online, with many condemning the ethnic prejudice.
Responding directly, Kuti dismissed such criticism as ignorant and divisive. He wrote:
“Believing ethnic superiority/inferiority is justifiable is slave mentality.”
The grandson of Fela went further to urge his critics to seek knowledge from the teachings and works of iconic Pan-African leaders such as his great-grandmother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, his grandfather Fela Kuti, as well as Kwame Nkrumah and Thomas Sankara.
According to him, Africa’s progress lies in unity, not division. “Africa would gain more when united,” he emphasized.
Made Kuti’s response has since been widely applauded by fans and social commentators, many of whom praised him for standing against tribal bigotry and promoting the ideals of Pan-Africanism that run deep in his family’s legacy.
The Kutis, known for their activism and outspoken stance on social issues, have long championed equality, justice, and African unity. With Made’s latest remarks, he appears to be carrying forward the torch of his family’s philosophy using his platform to challenge prejudice and call for a more united continent.
