The spotlight is back on African cinema as the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) gears up to thrill fans and industry insiders alike. Renowned for celebrating the best of African film, TV, fashion, and music, the AMVCAs continue to stand as a beacon of excellence on the continent’s entertainment calendar.
A Celebration Beyond Film
This year’s AMVCAs are not just an award show, they’re a four-day cultural extravaganza. Running from May 7th to May 10th, 2025, the event will climax in a spectacular awards ceremony on Saturday, May 10, broadcast live from Lagos, Nigeria, via Africa Magic channels across the continent.
The expanded schedule reflects the AMVCAs’ growing vision which is to spotlight not only film excellence but also the rich fashion, music, and cultural tapestry of Africa.
Returning Host and Rising Excitement
IK Osakioduwa, the beloved face of the AMVCAs since 2014, returns once again to host the main ceremony. With his signature charisma and crowd-pleasing energy, Osakioduwa’s return signals a night that promises not only prestige but pure entertainment.
Though the official list of performers and presenters is still under wraps, expectations are high. Past editions have dazzled with acts like Burna Boy and Tiwa Savage, and fans are expecting nothing less this year.
New Categories Spotlight Sound & Music
This year’s edition introduces two new categories: Best Sound Design and Best Original Score/Music. These additions recognize the essential role of music and sound in cinematic storytelling. According to AMVCAs head judge Femi Odugbemi, the new categories aim to honour creatives whose auditory artistry deepens emotional impact and enhances storytelling.
The Films to Watch
This year’s nomination list reads like a who’s who of African storytelling.
Seven Doors, directed by Femi Adebayo, leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Lead Actor (Adebayo himself), Best Lead Actress (Chioma Akpotha), Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup. Adebayo took to Instagram to celebrate the news, calling it “an incredible milestone” for the production.
Following closely is Lisabi: The Uprising, directed by Adedimeji Lateef, which secured 10 nominations. The historical drama has been praised for its compelling storytelling, rich visuals, and standout performances, earning nods for Best Movie and Best Lead Actor among others.
Red Carpet Royalty
No AMVCAs is complete without the glitz of the red carpet, and 2025 is expected to top the fashion charts once again. Fashion lovers are gearing up to witness jaw-dropping looks that blend Afrocentric elegance with high fashion flair.
The red carpet will be hosted by Uti Nwachukwu, VJ Adams, and Riyah (replacing last year’s host Toke Makinwa), promising memorable moments and striking interviews. From traditional headpieces to avant-garde couture, this year’s runway will influence style conversations long after the final award is handed out.
