The condition of the Bonny Camp to Ikota road remains a point of contention.

Concerns have been raised regarding the severely poor state of the Lekki-Epe Expressway and its potential impact on the upcoming E1 Series powerboat race in Lagos.

A public inquiry was directed at Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu concerning the stretch of road from Bonny Camp to Ikota Second Gate, which is currently described as being in a “deplorable condition.”

The poor state of the major artery is a source of massive daily traffic, and questions are now being asked about how visitors attending the high-profile E1 event, co-owned by stars like Didier Drogba and Tom Brady, will navigate the chaos.

However, reactions from some residents suggest that the city has handled major traffic challenges before. One resident recalled the previous year’s major events, commenting: “Lagos had detty December last year, right? How was that dealt with? Sane way, bro… And we keep on improving.”

Another person suggested that the E1 organizers were already aware of the situation before selecting the venue: “The organisers know how that place is before choosing Lagos… It’s not an issue for them.”

These comments imply that traffic management for major events in Lagos is a known challenge that has been successfully mitigated in the past.

The state of the Lekki-Epe Expressway has been a persistent issue for residents and commuters. The current condition of the road threatens to undermine the success of the international sporting event, which is being hosted to showcase Lagos as a vibrant, world-class city.

Authorities are yet to comment on the specific plans for road repairs or traffic management measures that will be put in place before the E1 Series event takes place on the Lagos Lagoon on October 4-5.

Urgent action is expected from the Lagos State Government to address the road infrastructure before the influx of international visitors.
