The Lagos State Government has announced that this year’s World Tourism Day celebration will be held at Tarkwa Bay Beach. The event, slated for September 27, will highlight the state’s commitment to turning its beaches into major tourist destinations.
On Monday, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, led a team to inspect the beach ahead of the event. She noted that Lagos is home to 183 kilometers of beachfront that has great potential to compete with global tourist hotspots.
“With the right infrastructure and sustainable investments, our beaches can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with international resorts like Cancun and the Maldives,” Benson-Awoyinka said.
She outlined the government’s plans to upgrade infrastructure, improve security, and expand ferry services to make Tarkwa Bay more accessible. The government also plans to train local youths to work as lifeguards, tour guides, and coastal guards.
The President of the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators, Mrs. Bolaji Mustapha, praised the government’s plans, stating that such interventions are crucial for the success of the initiative.
Mr. Tolulope Bradley, the Beach Master of Tarkwa Bay, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and assured them of the community’s full cooperation.
