The Lagos State Government has called on homeowners in its housing estates to prioritize sustainability and proper maintenance to keep their communities thriving.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, made this appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting with residents from state-owned estates in the Lagos division. The event took place at the Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate in Iponri, Surulere Local Government Area.
Toriola highlighted the need for residents to follow global best practices in managing facilities alongside appointed estate managers. He explained that sustainability is key to ensuring estates remain safe, livable, and valuable for homeowners.
“The ministry wants to build housing estates that are not just attractive but also durable and eco-friendly,” Toriola said. “This will improve residents’ quality of life and protect the environment.”
He urged homeowners and managers to focus on regular maintenance while complying with physical planning laws and environmental rules to avoid infrastructure breakdown. Toriola noted that sustainable estates benefit both people and the planet.
To support this goal, the ministry has set up a monitoring and compliance unit to enforce relevant regulations across Lagos State.
Toriola also advised residents to pay their estate dues promptly, including service charges, insurance premiums, and other fees, to fund ongoing sustainability efforts.
The current administration under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is actively expanding housing options. This includes finishing ongoing projects, forming partnerships, and launching joint ventures to deliver more homes by 2027.
During the meeting, the ministry collaborated with other government agencies, such as the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Health Management Agency (Ilera Eko), LASACO Assurance, and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). These groups presented on ways to maintain and sustain estates.
Representatives from estates like Abraham Adesanya in Ajah, Oba Adeyinka Oyekan in Lekki, LagosHOMS Surulere, and the host estate attended the session.
This initiative aligns with Lagos State’s broader push for resilient urban living amid rapid growth.
