In Lagos, two young women opened up to BestLagos.ng about their efforts to get the latest smartphones despite tight budgets.
One of them, known in local slang as a hookup or runs girl, described how she and her friend made the trip from the upscale island areas to the bustling mainland to buy an iPhone 16 using an installment plan.
They lacked the full cash upfront but aimed to settle the payments over six months. When pressed on how they’d manage, she replied knowingly, “You understand na,” alluding to their work providing the needed income.
Her friend considered upgrading to the newer iPhone 17 but backed out due to the high interest rates on the plan, which would inflate the total cost too much.
This tale emerges as iPhone 17 sightings surge across Lagos, creating a wave of envy and discussion.
In Lagos, the iPhone 17 prices range from 2 million naira to 3 million naira for standard models, though higher-end variants like the Pro Max can climb further. There are reports from Lagos vendors listing it at ridiculous prices as high as ₦4.2 million, sparking debates on inflated costs in the local market.
A user on X captured the vibe: “The way people dey buy this iPhone 17 for Lagos you go think say na 200k dem dey sell am.”
The frenzy underscores how quickly new tech spreads in the city, even amid economic pressures.
