Ifeanyichukwu Eze, the Personal Assistant to the Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly, Mr. Chinedu Onah, has tragically passed away following a road accident on the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway. The accident, which occurred as Eze returned from a funeral wake, also involved three other legislative aides and an additional passenger.
Mr. Chinonso Nwede, Secretary of the Deputy Speaker’s Legislative Aides Forum, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday, January 12, 2025. According to Nwede, the group had attended the wake in support of a friend whose mother’s funeral took place on January 11.
Eze sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The four other victims are currently receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries.
Until his untimely death, Eze served as the Youth Movement Coordinator for Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru in the Umuogudu Oshia Ward of Ohaukwu Local Government Area. Nwede described Eze as a promising young man who had overcome significant challenges, including losing his mother at an early age.
“As the only son, his father had placed great hopes in him and was proud to see him grow into a capable individual,” Nwede said.
Eze’s death was particularly heartbreaking as his colleagues were preparing to celebrate his recent completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, along with other personal achievements.
Nwede expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Deputy Speaker’s aides, calling Eze’s death a painful and irreplaceable loss. “This is one tragedy too many, and it is difficult to endure,” he said.
He extended condolences to Eze’s family, particularly his father, and sympathized with the Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly. Nwede also prayed for the speedy recovery of the other accident victims and peace for Eze’s soul.
