Lagos Island is already buzzing with anticipation as the iconic Eyo Festival prepares for its grand return on December 27, 2025.
The Eyo Festival, often hailed as the true symbol of Lagos, is steeped in history and cherished by those who grew up in the city. The upcoming event is generating significant excitement, as confirmed by a recent social media post from culture enthusiast Ayo Shonaiya.
Shonaiya, reflecting on his childhood, described the festival as a cherished memory, recalling the magnificent sea of white garments, the colourful Agas (hats), and the symbolic Opas (staffs). For many “Lagos boys,” including Shonaiya, the Eyo is a powerful personal connection to the city.
The festival, which was historically an annual event, saw changes to its frequency after concerns over safety and overcrowding. However, when it takes place, the atmosphere remains one of vibrant celebration and profound cultural pride. Shonaiya noted that recreating the Eyo spirit, even far from home, has always given him “goose pimples.”
The Eyo is more than just a parade; it is a spiritual and cultural cornerstone. As December 27th approaches, Lagosians are gearing up to welcome the majestic procession back to the Island, preserving the legacy that defines the soul of Lagos.
